27 February 2021 Prison Radio announced on its Instagram that activist, journalist, and prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal has been diagnosed with COVID-19. His symptoms have worsened rapidly, despite calls from activists and abolitionists across the United States to get him proper treatment outside of Mahanoy State Correctional Institution, where he has been held for decades. In the wake of numerous rallies, phone zaps, and campaigns in the past week and a half, pleas for Abu-Jamal to receive proper care have fallen upon uncompassionate ears.

Recent updates from the official Mumia Abu-Jamal Instagram report that he is suffering as follows:

“Congestive heart failure. Unrelenting skin eruptions are causing damaged, ruptured, leathery, dry, exposed wounds. Not one spot on his body is free of dry cracked and bloody open wounds. No longer in an outside hospital, Mumia is back in the prison infirmary in excruciating discomfort and pain.”

Given that Abu-Jamal suffers from Hepatitis-C, diabetes, and high blood-pressure, it is crucial that he receives proper care. The most recent picture posted on his official Instagram page shows that he is in demonstrably poor health, and his prospects for receiving better care are not good— he is currently receiving treatment in the prison infirmary. And this is not promising.

At The Reframer, we stand with the masses of abolitionists and activists calling for the immediate release of all prisoners, especially elders at risk of COVID-19 exposure. We must take a stand and remind politicians and prison officials that the whole world is watching, and we will not let them kill Abu-Jamal through blatant medical neglect. Please join us in participating in the phone-zaps organized by Prison Radio. Below, you can find a list of places to call and a script provided by the official Instagram page for Abu-Jamal.
